VELAGLAS ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (etfe) foil is the material of the moment for roof and facade projects. Multi-layered cushions and single ply foil allow architects and engineers to customise the building envelope to a greater degree than more traditional building materials.
Cushions, or pillows, formed typically with two or three layers of ETFE film are pressurised by a small air pump unit to between 200 and 500 pascals providing structural stability and insulation. The cushions are usually installed with an extruded aluminium perimeter clamping profile specifically designed for ETFE applications.
Thermal U-value is dependent on number of layers of ETFE foil in the cushion and can range from 3.5W/m2K for a two layer cushion to 1.5W/m2K for a four layer cushion. With the incorporation of insulation layers, values can increase to 0.18W/m2K. Single skin foil has a value of approximately 5.1W/m2K.
Fire performance has been tested with regulatory bodies around the world and complies with national codes and requirements. ETFE membrane is self extinguishing and shrinks away in a fire situation creating natural ventilation.
ETFE membrane is 100% recyclable and its raw material is permitted under the Montreal Protocol on the ozone layer.
